The ban on cycling in downtown Bayonne has aroused the anger of environmentalists and advocates of sustainable mobility
This is a lively debate in recent weeks in Bayonne, since at the beginning of the month the People's House banned biking on 50 streets of Little and Greater Bayonne.
The People's House had signposted at some points in the city to announce the measure, according to which from 10:30 to 19:15 and from 22:00 to 06:00, in about 50 streets of the city cyclists have to get off it and walk.
The measure has aroused anger in Baiona in the Txirrindola Association for Sustainable Mobility, as well as in the environmental movement Bizi!, which believes that "a ban has been imposed before the problem is solved", excluding other alternatives such as strengthening the network of bike lanes in the centre.
From the association they have stressed that mobility has become more difficult in recent weeks due to the assemblies of the Christmas season and that cyclists are forced to climb the sidewalks.
The environmental association Bizi! has called for direct disobedience, and even a few days ago there was an act of disobedience. They covered the signs that included a ban on riding a bike and the obligation to walk, and replaced them with posters with the slogan 'Pedestrian Zone.
They have explained from Bizi! that "although the pedestrian area is a priority area for pedestrians, cyclists are generally admitted to it, always at the pace of pedestrians and under conditions of walking without hindrance. The new signs installed by the People's House eliminate this possibility."
