The Government of Catalonia has imposed a pioneering penalty of 10,001 euros on a real estate agency for racismagainst a family who wanted to rent a flat. The victim is Hamid, a person of Moroccan origin residing in Mataró (Barcelona).
Hamid indicted 13 real estate agencies on the same charge because, despite all the requirements, they refused to rent a flat, most of which were filed after a series of bureaucratic procedures by public administrations.
However, after receiving assistance from the Desca Observatory, the Office for Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination of the Generalitat (OITND) found that these real estate agencies had acted racially and opened the first administrative penalty files in September 2025.
