The man triedon charges of colliding with another vehicle and killing three people while driving in the opposite direction on the N-I off Legorreta has been sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, less than the six years requested by the prosecution, after the charges and the defence reached an agreement.
The trial was scheduled to begin next week, but with the agreement reached this Friday, and the defendant's plea of guilt, there is no need to set up the People's Court and proceed with the trial.
Both sides have taken into account the fact that the accused - two men who were travelling with him in the vehicle and a woman in the other car whose boyfriend was injured - apologized to the families. "I want to apologize to all the relatives. I'm sorry, sorry, I was going with my friends and I didn't want to hurt anybody if I was with my friends, and I never wanted to hurt anybody, "the defendant said in tears during his hearing this Friday at the Gipuzkoa Court.
The relatives of the victims of the disaster of 26 February 2023 have been given the opportunity to speak today, and only the widow of one of the Hidakas wanted to speak. "God forgave him, so did I," said the woman.
The hitch occurred around 00:10. The driver had "diminished his abilities" from drinking alcohol, according to the prosecutor's indictment, and went off to the N-1, that is, in the opposite direction, and soon after crashed into another car that was driving in the right direction.
