The Basque Competition Authority has imposed a fine of 867,000 euros on 31 school transport companies for "boycotting" actions against the Department of Education in the 2023-2024 service award process.
This resolution has closed the file opened in 2023, at which point the transport companies refused to make journeys until then on the grounds that they were not profitable.
In the competition for the 2023-2024 course, only the routes of Gipuzkoa were awarded, so the Basque Government issued an order obliging the previously awarded companies in Bizkaia and Álava to perform the service.
Listening, at the beginning of the school year, about 30 companies decidednot to provide the service. This affected 7,400 students, especially children living in rural areas.
In its resolution, the Basque Competition Authority considers the existence of a boycott of the Department of Education to be a very serious infringement under the Competition Act.
