Preparations in progress in Bilbao to host the European rugby finals on the weekend of 22-23 May
The Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Bilbao City Council, the three institutions that have promoted this sporting event, have reported on mobility and operational security this Friday.
The Byzantine capital will host the European Rugby Finals on 22 and 23 May, which will have a significant impacton mobility, traffic and public transport in the city.
Just this Friday, the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Bilbao City Council, the three institutions promoting this sporting event, have reported on the mobility and security operation that will continue during these days. They have explained that the aim of this coordinated operation is for the Basque citizens and supporters of the four finalist teams to enjoy the best possible European rugby on 22 and 23 May.
The final of the EPCR Challenge Cup 2026 between Montpellier Herault Rugby and Ulster Rugby will begin on Friday, May 22 at 21:00, and the final of the Investec Champions Cup 2026 between Leinster Rugby and Union Bordeaux Begles on Saturday, May 23 at 15:45.
The celebration of the two finals will have an impact on traffic and public transport in Bilbao, especially in the vicinity of the San Mamés stadium and the Doña Casilda park. Doña Casilda will be in Champions Rugby Village, the official fan zone, and will remain open for two days from 11:00 to 01:00.
The operation provides for traffic interruptions, removal of parking spaces, changes in the OTA and restrictions on the tram network, among others.
