90% of Basques are concerned about world wars, and 75% believe the future will be more contentious
Half the population believes that Europe should strengthen its defense, even if that means allocating more public resources. Three out of four citizens believe that Europe should be less dependent on the US and look at powers like China.
The international conflict context is causing great concern in Basque society and a pessimistic view is prevailing among the population. 93.8% of Basques are very or rather concerned aboutthe wars taking place in the international context, as well as about the future. In addition, 75.8% of the population believe that the future will be more contentious and only 11.6% believe that it will be more peaceful.
These data have been collected in the latest measurement of the EITB Focus survey, which asks about various issues related to Basque politics and society, as well as the place of Europe in the world and aspects related to the international context.
As a result of the international concern, the Basque people are committed to strengthening European defence and to allocating more public resources to it.
Thus, more than half of the Basques surveyed (52.8%) believe that Europe should strengthen its defence even if it involved the use of more public resources. Only 7.2% oppose it, while 40% of the population say they have not responded or do not know.
There is also greater support among younger people for strengthening European defence, with 56.8% of young people aged 18 to 35 in favour and only 4% against, with another 39.7% saying they do not respond or do not know.
This position is in line with another prevailing view in Basque society, which advocates a multipolar gamble. According to the majority of the population, Europe should be less dependent on the US to ensure its security and strengthen relations with other powers such as China. "This statement is shared by 74.1% of the population.
Similarly, the EITB Focus survey has shown that Basque society attaches great importance to Europe from a strategic perspective, so that 90% of the population believe that the Basque Country and Navarre need a strong Europe to protect their economy and industry.
