The Gender Equality Index in the Basque Country is 66 points out of 100, 4.9 points below the state index
According to data released this Tuesday by Eustat, women work more at home and earn less money.
The Gender Equality Index (IIG) of the Basque Country stands at 66.0 points out of 100 in 2025, which is two points higher than in 2020, according to the analysis published this Tuesday by the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat. The data indicate that the indicator in the Basque Country is 4.9 points lower than in Spain (70.9 points), but 2.6 points higher than the European average (63.4 points).
According to the statistical agency, gender equality does not appear with the same intensity in all areas, so the health dimension has the highest level (86.3 points) and shows an improvement from 2020 (85.3 points).
Similarly, the two sub-parts of the concept of health, health status (87.7) and healthy behaviour (84.9), show "high and close" values.
At the other end is Time , with 62.5 points, one of the dimensions with the greatest marginof improvement , since women spend more time than men on child care (20.8 and 10.7 minutes respectively) and adult care (16.6 and 5.2 minutes respectively).
In addition, women are more involvedin domestic work , as 57% of women spend more than 10 hours a week on these tasks, compared with only 33.8% of men.
Money and work
The second best result, according to Eustat data, is in the Money section (71.7 points), although there are still "significant differences"as women receive about 76% of men's annual income and women's pension is 70% for men.
On the other hand, the Labour dimension has reached 68.1 points, with a "slight regression" from 2020 (when it reached 68.4), and shows a significant difference from the Labour Participation subdimension of 85.3 points to 54.3 points of segregation and quality of work.
In addition, women account for only 24 per cent of ICT posts and 31per cent of managerial positions.
The sections to be improved also include Power (56 points) and Knowledge (55.2 points). It should be noted that in STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) only 27.9% of women are students, while men account for 29.6% in education, health and well-being.
