The Basque Government and the Members of Parliament have once again authorised animal fairs by relaxing measures against nodular dermatosis
The evolution of the health situation makes it possible to recover part of the activity of the livestock sector, they say from the Basque Government.
The Basque Government and the Foreign Deputies of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa have agreed to relax the measures against the Nodular Pollutant Dermatosis , which will allow the reorganisation of fairs and other events with livestock, as reported by the Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries.
The decision has been taken in a coordinated manner by the animal health authorities as a result of the favourable evolution of the epidemiological situation of the disease in recent months.
Recovery of activity in the sector
The new Order approved by the Basque Government gives legal protection to this agreement and repeals the previous regulations in force since 30 January 2026. The Minister for Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government, Amaia Barredo, has stated thatthe evolutionof the health situation will make it possible to recover part of the activity of the livestock sector while maintaining the necessary preventive measures for the protection of livestock farming in the Basque Country.
The main innovation of the Order is to lift the restrictions imposed on temporary events with the presence of cattle, so that fairs, competitions, exhibitions, rural sports, romeries, markets, etc., may be held again under conditions established by the competentanimal health authorities.
Minimum vaccination coverage
The conditions for the movement of animals havealso been adapted because the Historical Territory of Gipuzkoa, located in the First Vaccination Area, has achieved minimum vaccination coverage against the disease and the epidemiological situation in recent months has been favourable.
According to the Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries, the decision to make the measures more flexible is supported by the current epidemiological situation.
The territories in the vaccination areas have completed the planned vaccination campaigns and achieved the levels of coverage set, and since the last outbreak detected in Spain last March, no new positive cases of Nodular Dermatosis have been confirmed.
With the exception of the outbreaks detected in Sardinia last spring, no new cases have been recorded on the rest of the continent, and most of the affected territories have gradually restored the organisation of livestock fairs, competitions and other livestock events, maintaining the necessary biosecurity measures.
