The area of forest burned in Spain since the beginning of the year has doubled in the last two weeks to 120,000 hectares. It is more than three times the area burned in the same period of 2025, according to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Thus, Spain is by far the state with the highest number of hectares burned in the European Union.
On 8 July, there were 58,383 hectares burned, and today there are 119,458 hectares, whereas on the same day in 2025, only 35,270 hectares were burned.
Two particularly tough weeks.
The last two weeks have been particularly harsh, with 23,076 hectares burned from 9 to 15 July, while from 16 July to today, provisional data show that 37,999 hectares have been burned, which is the highest weekly figure of the year. In 2025, between 9 and 22 July, only 10,300 hectares were burned.
This year, the fire in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara, the second largest since records were recorded in Spain, has significantly increased the area burned, and the firesin the Cinco Villas region of Zaragoza and Los Gallardos in Almería have been notable for their magnitude.
However, the area burned in the last two weeks is still far from what was burned in the week from 6 to 12 August last year (144,158 hectares) and the figures for the following week (178,141 hectares from 13 to 19 August).
