Bilbao Youth and Sports Councilor Itxaso Erroteta has "strongly" condemned the attack suffered this Thursday by a swimming pool lifeguard at the Txurdinaga Municipal Sports Center. Agroup of users waited for the worker outside the facilities,  and attacked him, as the socorrist drew their attention for not taking a shower before entering the pool.

According to Erroteta, he was attacked "for doing his job" because he alerted some users to his incyvical behavior at the Bilbao Kirolak facility and reported that "invismis punished " .

After regretting that this type of behaviour "is multiplying", the Youth and Sports Councillor has pointed out that these events "will be punished", since these people "will be subject to the regulations, either by withdrawing the card or by prohibiting access to the facility".

Itxaso Erroteta has also pointed out that, "as a result of the increase in these situations", the City Council has strengthened security measures since 2005 with more rescuers, auxiliaries and private security personnel.

Making the situation visible

In the same vein, the trade unions ELA, LAB, ESK, CCOO and UGT, represented on the Emtesport Concession Works Council, have denounced " the insults , threats and attacks being suffered by workers working in the municipal sports halls of Bilbao Kirolak ".

In this context, a rally has been called for this Tuesday, 28 July, from 12:00 to 13:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00, in front of the sports centre in Txurdinaga, to make the situation visible and to demand solutions.

They also call on Emtesporti, Bilbao Kirolak and the Bilbao City Council to "immediately take stronger measures to ensure the safety of workers and prevent further attacks".

In fact, according to the unions, Emtesport does not provide "sufficient resources" and leaves decisions to Bilbao Kirolak, who is also accused of "minimizing this type of behaviour and reducing the penalties provided for in the regulations", thereby encouraging "the repetition of these facts".

The assailant was taken to Basurto Hospital, and as reported this Friday by the police, no complaints have been filed in this regard so far.
