They recommend limiting water consumption in 21 municipalities in Busturialdea and Lea-Artibai
Ajangiz, Arratzu, Bermeo, Busturia, Ea, Elantxobe, Gernika-Lumo, Forua, Gautegiz-Arteaga, Ibarrangelu, Kortezubi, Mendata, Mundaka, Murueta, Muxika, Sukarrieta, Ispaster, Berriatua, Etxebarria, Markina-Xemein and Ondarroa are the populations affected by water shortages.
The BilbaoBizkaia Water Consortium recommends limiting the consumption of water for non-essential activities in 21 municipalities in Busturialdea and Lea-Artibai and urges the public to make rational use of water. The high temperatures and the lack of rain in recent weeks have led to the recommendation that the channels supplying these regions have a low water level.
In a statement, the managing body of the Bizkaia water network urges municipalities to take measures to limit water consumption, such as street cleaning or garden irrigation, as well as to prohibit thefilling of private swimming pools, irrigation of gardens or orchards, vehicle cleaning or private areas with water. "The aim is to avoid stricter measures and, incidentally, temporary suspension of supply," says the letter.
The municipalities recommended are Ajangiz, Arratzu, Bermeo, Busturia, Ea, Elantxobe, Gernika-Lumo, Forua, Gautegiz-Arteaga, Ibarrangelu, Kortezubi, Mendata, Mundaka, Murueta, Muxika, Sukarrieta, Ispaster, Berriatua, Etxebarria, Markina-Xemein and Ondarroa.
According to the consortium, some of the basins that supply these towns — Oka, Lea and Artibai — have been "in a state of structural scarcity "due to the long absence of rain.
In any case, they point out that the reservoirs of the Zadorra network that supply most of Bizkaia are "at normal levels" with a capacity of more than 71%.
The organization therefore urges all citizens to make responsible use of water in their private activities.
According to the data provided, in the last decade Bizkaia has seen its population's water consumption drop from 122 litres per day to 97-105 litres per day.
