Trump presses Iran as Tehran and Oman negotiate to open the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has claimed that talks with Oman to establish a new navigation mechanism at the strategic maritime crossing are progressing positively, while the US has called for its reopening and Donald Trump has threatened further attacks on Tehran if no agreement is reached.
Iran and Oman have made progress in negotiations to define the future of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main shipping routes for the transport of energy. Tehran has ensured that the talkshave a positive technical and political tone, while increasing pressure from the United States to reopen this strategic area.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagaei has explained that both countries are working on a new mechanism to manage maritime traffic and establish safe entry and exit routes for ships.
"The negotiations have been positively assessed at both the technical and political levels," Bagaei said, adding that Iran and Oman want to guarantee their sovereign rights and national security needs.
The member of Iranian diplomacy has stated that the final details of the agreement will be released once the talks are concluded and both sides reach a common decision.
Trump's Threat
Talks between Tehran and Mascate have progressed as US President Donald Trump maintains pressure on Iran and calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has assured that the sea crossing will be opened "soon" or that Iran will receive a "very hard blow." The US president has linked the state of the strait to Iran's nuclear program and insisted that Tehran cannot have nuclear weapons.
"If they turn back again, it will be good," Trump said, saying the administration is ready to launch an attack on Iran before opening a path of negotiation.
The US president has claimed that he abandoned an offensive to give room for talks, but Tehran has denied that there were such direct contacts.
The United States said they were involved in the talks.
Washington has stated that it is participating in negotiations between Iran and Oman. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured that the United States is involved in the meetings, a claim that has been rejected by the Iranian Government.
In addition, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that an agreement could be reached immediately to allow commercial ships to re-pass through Hormuz.
The Strait connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman is a key route for international energy trade. Tension escalated after Iran resumed hostilities and the United States strengthened its naval presence in the area.
