An overturned truck has caused up to 31 kilometers of traffic jams in the Bayonne area
A truck carrying debris overturned on Friday morning on the A-63 motorway at the height of kilometre 176, near the Bayonne South exit and the link with the A-64 towards Spain-France. Istripua is causing major traffic problems in one of the main links between the two countries.
The French Gendarmerie has reported that the accident has left only one of the three lanes of the motorway open, resulting in long traffic jams, which are already 31 kilometres between Ziburu and Bayonne, reaching the Biriatou toll.
In addition, the A-63 will be completely cut off from traffic from 22:00in order to remove the crashed truck. The work will last at least three hours and for the duration of the cut traffic will be diverted along the Baiona South exit towards Baiona North.
Alternative routes
The incident affects not only the motorway but also the road network in the area, so that on the coastal road between Ziburu and San Juan de Luz traffic is completely blocked, while on the inland road the situation is similar between Urruña and San Juan de Luz.
In view of this situation, the Gendarmerie recommends that drivers planning to travel from Spain to France use alternative routes such as the Somport border crossingto avoid major traffic jams planned in the next few hours.
