The Government of Navarre and the City of Petilla Aragón have agreed on a plan of more than 150,000 euros to protect the town from future fires
After the severe summer fire, they have agreed to launch new firewalls, a second pool of water and a youth livestock project.
The Government of Navarre and the City of Petilla Aragón have promoted emergency measures following the fire in the town in July. The planned investments will exceed 150,000 euros. The proposed measures and projects include the construction of firewalls and new water wells, as well as the promotion of extensive livestock farming for the natural cleaning of the mountain.
The Councillor for Rural Development and the Environment, José María Aierdi, agreed on these measures during his visit to Petilla Aragón on Monday, together with the mayor of the municipality, Florentino Aguas, who has carried out a first-hand inspection of the preventive measures already being taken in the area, including the firewall being carried out on the perimeter of the town.
The Autonomous Government has explained that Petilla Aragón is a very vulnerable area to the risk of fire. This summer's last fire burned about 15,000 hectares in the region, leaving the flames just two kilometers from the town centre.
Faced with this serious situation, both institutions have decided to act as a matter of urgency and undertake to update and adapt the management of the mountains in the area, as well as to establish the construction of a second water raft for prevention by the end of the year and to agree to the rehabilitation of a forest house in the municipality.
On the other hand, the Councillor and the Mayor have analysed the development possibilities offered by the Petilla Lab Project, in which the Emplea Foundation of San Martín de Unx and the Oreka Public Society have also participated.
This project proposes the promotion of extensive livestock farming and the implementation of various sustainable forest management actions as key fire-fighting tools, as well asthe attractionof young people to these activities to strengthen the primary sector and the local economy.
