Accidents on the roads of the Basque Country fell by 18.5% this summer
Long-haul travel has reached 4.28 million, while international traffic has remained stable and domestic traffic has grown by almost 2%.

The special summer departure and return traffic operation in the Basque Country has been completed and accidents have been reduced and mobility has remained stable. Between July and August, seven people died in road accidents, three fewer than in the same period of 2025, according to the Basque Government on Friday.
Of the seven fatalities — two in Álava, three in Bizkaia and two in Gipuzkoa — five belonged to vulnerable groups: three motorcyclists and two cyclists; six deaths have occurred on conventional roads and one on an urban road.
The number of accidents has fallen by 18.5% to 1,027 compared to 1,261 last year, while the number of serious injuries has fallen by 26% (60 compared to 81 last year) and the number of minor injuries by 8% (498 compared to 540 last year).
More than 4 million commuters
In total, the number of long-distance journeys has been 4,284,000, which is about 2.14 million vehicles that have passed through the Basque Country in the direction of departure and so many in the direction of return. International traffic has remained stable compared to 2025, while internal traffic has increased by almost 2, in both cases below expectations.
In Gipuzkoa, traffic has been particularly intense in the border area of Biriatou, especially during the days of increased mobility associated with the return operation and especially during the last two weekends of August.
The special operations launched at the Armignon link and at the AP-1/N-622 in the Vitoria-Gasteiz sense and at the N-622/A-1 in the Burgos-Madrid sense have contributed to improving traffic fluidity.
On the other hand, the main traffic jams in the return operation have been related to the return of vehicles that moved to the Basque Country on 12 August on the occasion of the solar eclipse.
So far this year, 23 people have died on Basque roads: 11 in Gipuzkoa, seven in Álava and five in Bizkaia.
