The new course begins in the ACV, focusing on improving skills, coexistence and digital health
The deployment of the Comprehensive Strategy 2025-2028, promoted by the Department of Education, will mark the current and next courses, conditioned by demographic declines and the use of AI.
The 2026-2027 course is under way in the ACV with a road map aimed at strengthening the quality of subjects and ensuring the well-being of students.
A total of 280 386 pupils from Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, ESO and Baccalaureate have returned to the classrooms in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, a figure that confirms the demographic downward trend, with 12 291 fewer enrolments (4.2% less) than last year. Despite the fall in the birth rate, the system has strengthened its attention to equality and diversity by increasing the number of professionals in this field by a total of 5,476.
The Education Counsellor, Begoña Pedrosa, began the course with a visit to the Amurrio School (Álava) Mendi, accompanied by the mayor of the town, Txerra Molinuevo, who has set this centre as an example of the priorities of the new era for its projects to develop reading capacity, drive digital transformation and promote sustainability.
This course is supposed to be a methodological milestone, as planning will be organized in connection with the Comprehensive Strategy for the Improvementof Educational Outcomes , so that from now on the diagnostic, monitoring and evaluation processes will not be completed with the calendar year and the processes will continue in order to give stability to teachers.
EDUCATION
X-ray of the new school year
"We want to take a further step so that the improvement of education continues and concrete decisions are made in each school. We need to know what our students need, use the information available to them to make decisions and see if the measures are working," said Begoña Pedrosa.
Improving reading skills
With regard to the curriculum, the Department of Education will strive to improve mathematical, scientific and, in particular, reading skills. In order to combat the dispersion caused by the continued use ofscreens, schools will deepen their capacity for understanding, interpretation and critical thinking. "This task requires time, stability and support. The aim is to ensure that the priorities we have set have a real translation into educational practice."
The operational innovations will also reach the Compulsory Secondary Education through the implementation of the Hezi+ programme, aimed at rearranging spaces, times and methodological content in the 1st and 2nd grades of ESO. On the other hand, the baccalaureate centres will use the results of the University Access Test (PAU) not only as a procedure for access to higher education, but also as an internal diagnostic tool for the review and adaptation of their competency assessment systems.
ALMOST.
The conscious use of technology and the internalization of artificial intelligence are the main challenges of the course. With the Digital Intelligence Plan 2025-2029, the Basque administration aims to protect the digital health of minors, both in the school environment and in the family. Pedrosa stresses that "the challenge is not to have more technology in the classrooms, but to know how to use it better.
Euskera
The strengthening of the Basque language as the centrepiece of the Centre's Linguistic Project is another key to the new course, integrating the Basque language into the general planning of education.
