The first fatal train accident this year took place nine months ago in Adamuz, Córdoba, on 18 January, when a train from the Iryo company, which was travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and entered the adjacent railway line and crashed into a train from the Renfe Madrid-Huelva line, killing 46 people.
Urda (Toledo) today, Wednesday, is the second major rail accident in Spain this year, and one of the most serious in the history of the high-speed rail network.
The first fatal train accident this year took place nine months ago in Adamuz, Córdoba, on 18 January, when a train from the Iryo company, which was travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and entered the adjacent railway line and crashed into a train from the Renfe Madrid-Huelva line, killing 46 people .
On the other hand, on the20th of January, on the railway line between Gelida and Sant Sadurni d'Anoia in Barcelona, a train driver died, but the accident did not occur on a high-speed train, but on a train in Rodalies, in which 41 people were injured.
On the other hand, the last serious incident on the high-speed line occurred on 12 October, when a AVE train from Madrid burned off Ricla (Zaragoza). As a result, the Madrid-Barcelona line had to be cut in both directions and passengers had to be evacuated.
The most fatal accident occurred in Torre del Bierzo (León).
The train accident that caused the most deaths in Spain occurred on 3 January 1944 , when, on leaving the Torre del Bierzo station in León, a train travelling from Madrid to Galicia, full of passengers, collided with a train machine.
The Franco regime initially silenced the tragedy, which Renfe later reported resulted in 78 deaths and 75 injuries, although it is estimated that there were hundreds of deaths — about 500, according to some sources.
Thirteen years ago, on 24 July 2013, an Alvia high-speed train covering the Madrid-Ferrol route derailed in Angrois, A Coruña, killing 80 people and wounding 143.
