U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will cut tariffs on China from 20% to 10% after holding his first meeting with Xi Jinping for six years.
On board the Air Force One, back to Washington, Trump has specified that this reduction will significantly reduce US charges on China, and that Xi is committed to strengthening controls on fentanyl trafficking.
The Republican leader has explained that the measure "rewards cooperation with China" and aims to "open a new era" in bilateral relations. He has also announced thatBeijing will resume the purchase of American soya.
Trump and Xi have agreed to meet again in China in April next year, but the US president has clarified that they have not discussed the issue of Taiwan. The Busan meeting took place outside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in the South Korean city of Gyeongju.
Diplomatic sources have stressed that the rapprochement could lead to a change of tone in the relationship between the world's two largest economies, but have warned that commitments will have to be made in the coming months.
