At least 50 people have been killed and 70 injured in an explosion at an explosive depot in Namhkam, Shan state, in northeastern Myanmar, near the border with China.
Several residential buildings in the area have been damaged by the blast, and emergency services are looking for more people in the rubble, Myanmar media reported.
The rebel group Ta'ang National Liberation Army has confirmed that the incident took place in an ammunition depot containingcommercial explosives .
The army has been in charge in Myanmar since the 2021 coup d'état, with the military conducting a powerful crackdown on opposition, activists and protesters, which has led to increased hostilities between the army and rebel groups, particularly in the north-east of the country, near the border with China, and in the state of Rajine (west).
