Paxinian won the election in Armenia, according to polls

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Paxinian's Civil Pact party has won the legislative election, according to polls.

Some polls have given theruling party an absolute majority of , while others predict a narrower victory with a narrow margin over the main opposition party. Samvel Karapetian is the leader of this opposition group. 

The ballot boxes were closed at 8 p.m. local time (6 p.m. in the Basque Country), and according to the Central Electoral Board (CEC), 58.97%of Armenians voted, representing almost 1.5 million of the 2.5 million eligible voters.

Today 's elections are the first in Armenia after the defeat of the Nagorno-Karabakh and are also the most polarized in recent years, under pressure from Russia to bring the Caucasian country closer to the European Union (EU).

Paxinian has been moving away from Russia and approaching the EU for the past year, and Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to prevent this rapprochement at all costs, so in today's election the Armenians had to decide whether they supported the prime minister's pro-Europeanism . Paxinian has the support of the EU and the US. 

The center-right Civil Compact party came to power with the 2018 revolution, and even today, it was a big favorite. But not only does Paxinian need to win, but he also needs an absolute majority to amend the Constitution and sign peace with Zerbaijan.

On the other hand, the opposition  — very divided and divided into several factions — does not want to breakthelink with Russia .  Moscow threatens to sell more expensive energy to Everan and return Armenians living in Russia to their country of origin.
