Trump says there's no "friction" with Spain after the World Cup final
The President of the United States said he congratulated Spain on its victory in the World Cup final and denied any friction with Madrid.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said there isno longer "tension" with Spain after the Spanish team won the World Cup by beating Argentina 1-0 in the extension of the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
"I have spoken to Spain and congratulated them on having a great team," Trump said before boarding the Air Force One to return to Washington. The president has not clarified whether he has sent this message directly to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Asked about the bilateral relationship between the two countries, Trump replied, "No, there's no tension, I have no friction with anyone. "
After the match, the President of the United States took part in the medal ceremony for the players of the two finalist teams and presented the world champion trophy to the captain of the Spanish combined, Rodri.
Trump's statements come after months of tense relations between his administration and the Spanish government, mainly due to differences over Madrid's commitments to NATO defense spending.
