U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Moscow and Kiev this weekend to try to revive peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
"They have a proposal to end the war, because I have put an end to eight wars," Trump said, recalling that he has not received the Nobel Peace Prize despite his efforts to end international conflicts.
Witkoff, the White House's special envoy, and Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, will meet Russian PresidentVladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, after which they will travel to Kiev to meet Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
Trump admitted that he hoped the war inUkraine would be easier to resolve, but that Putin and Zelensky "hate each other deeply," making peace talks difficult.
According to the New York Times, Washington wants Ukraine and Russia to stop their attacks temporarily, at least as long as US envoys remain in the region.
According to the paper, it is unclear whether Witkoff and Kushner will submit a new peace proposal or press for the closure of the previous one.
The trip comes a year after Trump took Putin in Alaska in August 2025 to try to end the war, one of the Republican campaign promises.
