Mamdani will attend 9/11 homage in New York, and Trump will be the first president not to attend
New York will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this Friday with the presence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Mamdani confirmed in July that he will attend the Ground Zero tribute, a decision that has provoked criticism among some of the victims' relatives and survivors' groups for their supportand for some of their political statements and decisions.
The mayor himself has defended himself and declared that he will come to honour families, survivors and emergency teams.
A ceremony without political speeches
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum recalls that the ceremony is notpartisan. Since 2012, politicians have not participated in the event and only attend as witnesses. Relatives read the names of the victims and seven moments of silence are kept.
Former Presidents Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush,among others, will attend.
Trump, on the other hand, will not go to Ground Zero, becoming the first U.S. president notto participate in the New York tribute.
According to the New York Times, Trump wanted to make a speech in Ground Zero, but the rules of homage do not allow political intervention.
