Former Kosovar President Hashim Thaci sentenced to 25 years in prison for war crimes
However, the penalties for crimes against humanity have been lifted.
Former Kosovar President Hashim Thaci has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for four war crimes (arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture and murder) committed between 1998 and 1999 during the Kosovo war, and three former leaders of the Kosovar Liberation Army have also been convicted.
In particular, the 58-year-old former president has been charged with aiding and abetting a criminal enterprise targeting alleged opponents of the Kosovo Liberation Army, although he has lifted the penalties for crimes against humanity.
Thaci himself heard the details of the sentence while Judge Charles Smith was reading the sentence.
Meanwhile, on an esplanade in The Hague, hundreds of Kosovars have concentrated to express their support for Thaci and have proclaimed themselves "innocent."
According to the judges, Thaci, Kadri Veseli, 18, Rexhep Selimi, 13, and Jakup Krasniqi, 25, shared "a common criminal purpose" and contributed significantly to the attacks on people who stood in the way of the Osovo Liberation Army.
