In 2025, 2.25% of commercial cinema shows in the Basque Country were in Basque
Only 2% of the total number of films released in Euskal Herria in 2025 were viewed in original Basque or folded into Basque in commercial cinemas, according to the study presented today by the Basque audiovisual platform Pantailak Euskaraz together with the Observatory of Linguistic Rights.
According to the data collected in that report, 1,100 films were released last year in the Basque Country, as collected from the websites zernonikusi.eus, cultura.gob.es, ezae.eus and cnc.fr, as well as from the film programming of the newspaper Gara , of which three have been released in Basque in the French Basque Country (Pheasant Island, Jone Island and Karmele) and 22 in the Basque Country.
According to the report, of the more than 200,000 commercial cinemas in the Basque Country in 2025, 4,480 were in Basque, representing 2.25% of the total.
22 films released in Basque, more than ever
As explained at the hearing, there has been a significant increase in the budget for film production in Basque in the Basque Government's subsidies, which has had a "positive impact" on the number of productions in Basque that have reached the halls, the largest in history.
"However, the number in Basque, in proportion to all the films that are released each year in cinemas, is very small, and this continues to encourage many citizens to consume cinema in Spanish by chance," they say.
That is why the Pantailak Euskaraz platform and the Observatory for Linguistic Rights believe that it is necessary to strengthen economic resources and progressive language policies for films in Basque and for the duplication of foreign films.
