Summary will present the Broad Front and election candidate on October 17
The Sumar Movement, IU, Mas Madrid and Comun have set a date for the presentation of the new left-wing space, which has not yet been decided who will be the candidate, and it remains to be seen whether Podemos will join the coalition.
The parties around Sumar will officially present the Broad Front on October 17 , the new name they will use to run for the next general election.
The decision was taken on Sunday at the meeting of the parties and ministers that make up the minority partner of the Spanish Government , a space made up of the Sumar Movement, the United Left, Mas Madrid and Común, which took place after Congress rejected two housing decrees, at a time when the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, is considering the possibility of early elections.
Housing will be one of the axes
The parties around Sumar have highlighted the massive mobilizations of recent days and put housing at the centre of their political project. They say that "rentism" bleeds the country "and that parties and institutions must listen to the street clamour." Without housing there is no legislature, "they have said.
The members of the Frente Amplio have explained that, regardless of whether or not elections are called, they will continue to respond to the housing problem and to the demands of the citizens, who, according to them, have the sole competence to decide on an early election, and have said that they are prepared to deal with any situation.
Moreover, this left-wing space has considered itself an "indispensable" force to form a progressive government for another four years.
Candidate, yet to be decided
The presentation of the Frente Amplio will be accompanied by another of the main unknowns: who will bethe candidate for the general election. Since the resignation of the second vice-president of the Spanish Government, Yolanda Díez, the space around Sumar remains undefined.
A number of candidates have appeared in recent weeks, including the Minister of Health, Mónica García , the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, and the Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, who are also considering García's candidacy in Madrid, although he is nominated in Mas Madrid for the Madrid autonomous elections of 2027.
On the table is also the name of the former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, who in recent months has increased her political presence and said that she is prepared to return to politics if it serves to unite all the forces of the left, although she has stressed that at the moment she is "not a candidate for anything."
The participation of Podemos, in the air
Another major issue facing Frente Amplio is whether or not Podemos will enter the new space. The relationship between Sumar and Podemos has distanced itself from the breakdown of the electoral coalition by the two forces in 2023, and since then they have had different political strategies.
Summary has left the door open for Podemos and other current parliamentary allies to join the new project, while Irene Montero has proposed open primaries between the entire left for the bases to decide the weight each party will have within the candidacy.
Meanwhile, the parties that make up the Frente Amplio will continue to talk to other forces, including MrAragonesista, Mr Chunta Aragonesista, Mr Mes per Mallorca and the Partido Verde.
