The Kings of Spain will travel to Ceuta today to support their citizens after the migration crisis
Philip VI and Letizia will pay tribute to the victims who died trying to swim from Morocco on 30 and 31 July. The Kings will spend the night in the city before travelling to Melilla on Wednesday.
The Kings of Spain, Felipe VI and Letizia, will be in Ceuta this Tuesday; it will be their first trip to Ceuta since the beginning of their reign in 2014. Among other things, they will be given an institutional reception, visit the Vicente Aleixandre College, pay tribute to the people killed in the massive influx of migrants at the end of July and meet representatives of Ceuta society.
The day began with a large presence of officers of the National Police and the Civil Guard in the vicinity of the City Hall, where the Kings will be received at 12.30 p.m. by the President of the Autonomous City (PP), Juan Jesús Vivas, his government team and the deputies of the Board, who will meet Felipe VI Vivas at the Palace of Autonomy, where the Kings will receive the keys to the city.
At 4.45 p.m., Philip VI and Letizia will visit the Vicente Aleixandre Children's and Primary School and then move to the Muslim cemetery in Sidi Embarek, where they will take partin an event in memory of the people who died on 30 and 31 July while swimming across the border from Morocco, where some of the victims are buried in unnamed graves, all of which have not been identified.
The official agenda will conclude at 7 p.m. with a meeting with representatives of Ceuta society at the Parador, where the King of Spain will address the attendees, who will spend the night in Ceuta and travel on Wednesday to Melilla, another autonomous city they have not visited since the beginning of their reign.
Protection after the July migration crisis
The visit took place two and a half months after the entry of several migrants from Morocco, after which more than 10,000 people remained in Ceuta, but many voluntarily returned to their country of origin. The situation has gradually returned to normal, although there are still people arriving in that crisis.
The Royal House had been trying for some time to visit Ceuta and Melilla, the only two territories in Spain that Philip VI and Letizia had not visited since 2014.
In recent weeks, Philip VI has argued that Ceuta, as the external border of the European Union, needs the solidarity of the other Member States.
Precedent 2007
The last visit of some kings of Spain to Ceuta and Melilla took place on 6 and 7 November 2007, when Juan Carlos I and Sofia travelled to both cities with the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
On this occasion, the Moroccan authorities have not officially expressedtheir position onthe trip ofPhilip VI and Letizia. King Mohamed VI spoke last Friday about relations with Spain in a speech to Parliament in which he argued that they are Morocco's "sovereign choice" and rejected that they may be conditioned by "threats" or "blackmail".
For his part, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has stressedthe importance of bilateral relations with Morocco and has ruled out that the visit of the Kings should provoke any reaction from the neighbouring country, since this is a trip to two Spanish cities.
