The Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarria, has announced that the Ministry has approved a series of improvement measures proposed by the City Council, which "will make it possible to adapt the Arana Centre to the reality and needs of the city, while ensuring better care for refugees".
The Arana refugee reception centre in Vitoria-Gasteiz will have a maximum of 200 places and will share facilities with neighbours.
This was reported this Friday by the Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarria, who announced that the Ministry of Social Inclusion, Social Security and Migration led by Elma Saiz has approved the improvement measures proposed by the Mayor at the September meeting in Madrid.
Etxebarria has described as "very important" the step taken by the Ministry and stressed that it has been "the result of dialogue and cooperation between institutions", since, according to the Commissioner, these measures "will make it possible to adapt the Arana Centre to the reality and needs of the city, while ensuring better care for refugees".
Thus, Etxebarria has confirmed that the Ministry has approved 0 the "gradual expansion of the Centre , with the gradual incorporation of users, up to a maximum of 200 places, compared to the 350 initially planned." In this way, the Centre will be better adapted to the public and municipal services that users need with certainty, such as social, health or educational services. "
In addition, as requested by the Mayor at the meeting with the Minister, it has been agreed that some of the facilities of the Centre may also be used by neighbours, not only sports facilities (as planned), but also other spaces where residents and persons residing in the Centre may share activities, which, according to the Mayor, "will facilitate and improve coexistence, meeting and integration between refugees and neighbours".
The Ministry is also committed to coordinating all matters affecting the centre in one way or another with the competent institutions, the Provincial Council of Álava, the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Basque Government.
Etxebarria further states that there is an interest in receiving refugees gathered in the centre in family centres (i.e. in families), as she informed Saiz, and the Ministry reiterates her willingness to take this criterion into account "as far as possible".
Etxebarria thanks the ministry for its "responsiveness and commitment" and for the "sensitivity" shown to the needs of Vitoria.
