The mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz has asked the Spanish Government to reduce the number of places in the Arana refugee centre from 350 to 200
Maider Etxebarria asks the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, that some of the spaces in the centre be used by the area's neighbours to help integrate refugees.
The Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarria, has asked the Spanish Government to reduce from 350 to 200 the places in the refugee centre inthe former Arana residence in Vitoria-Gasteiz, which would allow for better management.
The mayor has reported at a press conference that on Monday he held a meeting in Madrid with the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, on which the centre depends, to make a number of requests because the planned reduction in places would be "better" suited to the city's social services capacity.
He also asked the Minister to ensure that some of the spaces in the centre can be used by the residents of the area, not just the sports areas to which he has already committed himself, but the library and other social centres, which the Mayor has stressed will help to integrate refugees.
Another request that Etxebarria sent to Saiz is that the Government improve coordination with the Basque Government in the field of social inclusion, education or health pathways.
The mayor has assured us that the minister has undertaken to consider these requests.
He recalled that the aim of this centre is to give hope to migrants who are forced to leave their countries because of wars or political ideas or sexual status, and recalled that Vitoria has always been a city of solidarity with the thousands of people who have arrived from other Spanish provinces in previous decades.
The mayor has stressed that this resource is not "a center of criminals," as "the extreme right and other parties that have bought the speech want to make believe," referring to the PP.
