The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stated during his visit to Gernika that "the bombing of the Condor Legion in Gernika in 1937 was a brutal crime" and expressed solidarity with the victims of the bombing and stressed the need to "defend peace, freedom and democracy".

The President of Germany, the King of Spain, Philip VI, and the President of the Pradales, among many other authorities and representatives of the institutions, took part.

Emilio Aperribay, one of the survivors of the Gernika bombing in April 1937, has stated that he is "shocked" by this Friday's tribute to the victims in the town of Biscay and has thanked the German president, who hopes that what happened "will not happen anywhere else."
