June 16, 2025, Chittagong, Eastern Refinery Limited, Bangladesh: Eastern Refinery Limited, the only oil refinery in Bangladesh, was established in 1968 on the banks of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong city. This oil refinery produces 16 types of petroleum products. Mineral oil imported from oil-producing countries in the Middle East is refined in this plant...The Iran-Israel war has created fears of fuel price hike in the Bangladesh market. The fear is due to Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the channel through which Bangladesh imports oil and gas. More than 80 percent of the more than 8 million tons of fuel oil that Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation-BPC imports annually comes from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Fuel tankers come through the Strait of Hormuz. The 5 to 6 million tons of liquefied natural gas or LNG that Bangladesh imports annually also comes through this channel.
