Windows 10 will lose official support this Tuesday: so you can extend security updates for a year at no cost
The day has come, the 14th of October will finally run out of Windows 10 support, endangering the security of millions of computers around the world, even though they can extend their security for at least one year.
In any case, users of Windows 10 in the European Union can access security updates for free, as Microsoft promised in September.
This possibility is due to pressure from European consumer protection organisations (Euroconsumers and the Consumer and User Organisation (OCU), among others), which, on the basis of the Digital Markets Act , have called for these updates to be extended free of charge by the technology company.
40.5% of computers with Microsoft's operating system have Windows 10, according to September data from the Statcounter consultancy, according to which the most up-to-date version, Windows 11, is 48.9%.
The number remains high, given that in 24 hours everyone will be left without 'software', security and technical assistance updates, and that Windows 11 will maintain those resources.
Allcomputers with Windows 10 do not meet the minimum technical requirements to update to the most recent version, and not all users can buy a new computer with that version installed from the factory.
However, those in this situation still have a way of maintaining protection, as direct as the extended security updates program (ESU).
They cost $30 and have a value of one year (until October 13, 2026). Another option is to exchange a thousand points from Microsoft Rewards, which has points. In any case, you must register and do so before the end of the one-year period granted by the ESU program from the 'Windows Update' page.
