What will the solar eclipse look like from your country? Check here for maps of the historical phenomenon
The moon will completely hide the Sun on August 12, 2026: it will be a phenomenon that will never be seen again in the Basque Country until the year 2183. The entire solar eclipse will begin at sunset, and the day will be "the day of two sunsets." The eclipse can be traced live through Orain.eus.
The sky will present an unusual image on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The moon will begin to set in front of the sun at 7.30 p.m. and the solar eclipse will be at 8.27 p.m.
For a few minutes, the moon will completely cover the solar disk, and the day will turn into night, after which the phenomenon will lose intensity, an hour later, until the sky regains its normal appearance.
The uniqueness of this eclipse has made it a historic rendezvous for the population, as a similar phenomenon will never be seen again from our territory until 2183, so it will be a great opportunity to observe the entire solar eclipse.
Check out what it looks like from your village.
The vision of the eclipse will vary according to the exact point at which it is observed. The hour, the duration of the whole phase, and the degree of the sun's concealment will depend on the exact position.
In addition, the eclipse can be tracked live through Orain.eus and EITB, with up-to-date information and explanations to understand some of the most unusual astronomical events.
"Two on Twilight Day."
The Basque Government has prepared a travelling exhibition under the title "The Day of the Two Sunsets", referring to the moment when the eclipse will transform the late evening light and allow two changes in the sky on the same day.
Total eclipses of the Sun occur when the Moon stands between the Earth and the Sun, and completely blocks the light coming from our star. Though they often occur in several parts of the planet, it is a much less common event to see from the same region.
That is why 12 August 2026 will be an exceptional date for observing the sky in the calendar, a short but unrepeatable phenomenon for those who contemplate it from Euskal Herria.
