Solar eclipses
What is the sun crown?
Next August 12th the sun will be completely hidden behind the moon, and as a result of this eclipse we will be able to observe a second phenomenon in different corners of Euskal Herria: the solar crown. The astronomer Virginia Garcia of Aranzadi has explained to us what it consists of.
The Government will disseminate through a new website all the information about the solar eclipse on August 12
All the information generated about the eclipse will be made available to the public through the official website eclipsea.euskadi.eus. During the presentation, Virginia Garcia, a member of Aranzadi, has stressed that to see the eclipse, homologated glasses must be used and appropriate places chosen.
Great expectation about the total eclipse that can be seen on August 12
The moon will gradually begin to cover the sun, around 19:30, and the key moment will be between 20:27 and 20:28. Many people do not want to miss this phenomenon, and the inns in southern Navarre are overflowing for that day.
Álava, privileged territory of the Basque Country to observe the solar eclipse of August 2026
For more than a century the entire eclise has not been seen in the Basque Country, and on the 12th of August Álava will be the most privileged territory, the special astronomical phenomenon of avita will be visible throughout the territory. However, the peak of the eclipse will be around 20:28, so the sun will be "very low" by then, and it is likely that those who do not have a clear west/northwest horizon will not see it, because the sun will be neatly hidden by then.
