The sky has been the scene on Wednesday of a historic and unforgettable astronomical phenomenon. This entire solar eclipse of August 12 has mobilized thousands of people to give away a spectacle that has not lived in the Basque Country for more than a century; the latest such phenomena were in 1905 (complete) and 1912 (mixed).
From the first hour of the morning, thousands of Basques and visitors from all over the world, equipped with approved glasses, have taken the strategic points of the seven territories, facing west, in order to enjoy the eclipse.
The phenomenon began after 7.30 p.m. with a partial phase of almost an hour. The moon has gradually "bitten" the solar disc without completely extinguishing the daylight to give way to the dazzling glow of Baily's Pearls and the famous diamond ring.
This phenomenon has reached 100% in Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, as well as in most of the territories of Bizkaia and Álava. In the case of San Sebastián, Pamplona or Bayona, the Sun has covered 99%.
