Morocco kills three members of the Polisario Front in an attack
At least three members of the Polisario Front , including Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz , a member of the group's National Secretariat and the son of former Saharan PresidentMohamed Abdelaziz, were killed this Sunday in a Moroccan attack in Western Sahara near the separation wall.
The Sahrawi Presidency reported that these three people had died in a military action in the area, although the circumstances of their deaths and the identity of the other two deaths had not been specified.
Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz is theson of Mohamed Abdelaziz, former President of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) and historic leader of the Polisario, who died in May 2016 from a long illness at the age of 68 and led the struggle for the independence of the Sahara to the UN.
His son, born in 1989 in the Sahrawi camps in Tindouf, south-west Algeria, graduated in International Relations and joined the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army (fighting for the independence of Western Sahara from Morocco) in November 2011.
Morocco has not made a statement.
For the time being, the Moroccan authorities have made no statement on what happened and have not given details of the death of the son of the historic leader of the Frente Polisario.
Mohamed Abdelaziz was Secretary-General of the Frente Polisario from 1976 until his death, and for 24 years as President of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic.
Tension since 2020
Eastern Sahara has been in a tense situation since 2020, whenMoroccan troops entered the demilitarized zone of Gerguerat, which separates Mauritania from the Sahara, to dismantle a sit-in of Saharan activists who blocked the only road linking Morocco with sub-Saharan Africans.
The Polisario believed that Morocco's action led to the breakdown of the ceasefire agreement signed under the auspices of the UN in 1991 and launched military operations against the wall erected by Morocco in Western Sahara to shield its control over 80 per cent of the Saharan territory under its administration.
Morocco responded mainly with drone bombardments of pro-independence forces trying to gain access to the occupied territories.
The eastern and southern listsof Western Sahara account for 20 per cent of the territory, and for Polisario they are part of the "liberated territories", while the UN calls them "mattress zones" (necessarily demilitarized) and Morocco considers them part of its territory.
