EU interior ministers will discuss the crisis in Ceuta today at an extraordinary meeting
European Union interior ministers will hold an extraordinary video conference meeting this Tuesday to discuss the migration crisis in Ceuta following the arrival of thousands of people from Morocco in recent days.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez , requested an urgent meeting of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and received the support of 22 Member States.
The Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will inform his counterparts ofSpain's commitment to the control of the EU's external borders and to compliance with Community regulations on migration. According to his department's sources, he will defend Spain's migration policy as "preventive, not short-term" and based on cooperation with countries of origin and transit, including Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia and Morocco.
It will also explain the data for those who arrived in Spain illegally which, according to the Ministry of the Interior, fell by more than 42% in 2025 and by about 25% throughout the state until mid-July.
The Twenty-seven will support Spain
Prior to the meeting, the ambassadors of the Member States to the EU discussed the situation in the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper). According to diplomatic sources, the Twenty-seven expressed their solidarity with Spain and acknowledged the speed of the response deployedto manage the crisis.
Moreover, they condemned the death toll in the migration crisis, which, according to official figures released on Monday, has resulted in more than 70 deaths.
Ministers are expected to discuss measures to strengthen coordination with other countries and improve the protection of the European Union's external borders.
Europe calls for a common response
In her letter to Pedro Sánchez, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, praised the management of Spain and Morocco and stressed the need for a joint, joint and supportive European response to the migration crisis.
On the other hand, the Spanish Government has about 3,000 troops from the security forces and the army in Ceuta, who will continue "as long as necessary" to ensure security in the city.
