Trump will impose very high tariffs on the EU if he makes Canada "malicious" associate membership
"If it's good intentions, that's fine," he added, not revealing what would be good or bad intentions.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with "very high tariffs" and trade restrictions if Brussels acts "maliciously" to make Canada its first associate member, but will not take action "if it is in good faith."
"If they do that, if I think it's an action against us, I'm going to impose very high tariffs, or I'm going to stop trading with Europe in many ways," Donald Trump said after landing with Air Force One in North Carolina.
"If it's good intentions, that's fine," he added, not revealing what would be good or bad intentions.
This was the first public reaction ofthe President of the White House to Von der Leyen's proposal in his State of the European Union (SOTEU) address to the plenary of the European Parliament to make Canada the first EU associate member, which was also attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who will deliver a speech this Thursday in the European Chamber.
