The Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts is ready to reopen its doors. Following the intervention of architects Norman Foster and Luis María Uriarte, the museum has been renovated and significantly expanded and its official opening will take place today.
The museum has an additional 6,000 square meters. It respects the formal and functional peculiarity of the two historic buildings to date, but a third area has been added to this project called Agravitas . Over the former museum, at 11 meters high, the new structure appears to be in the air. It has glass walls and an area of 2,000 to 5,000 square meters, divided into two floors.
The transformation can also be seen in the Arriaga Atrium. It's under Agravitas and what used to be street space is now covered. In the center is the sculpture dedicated by Francisco Durrio to composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, which in Foster's words is the museum's new heart.
Upstairs, the BBKmuseoa opens, a 1500-square-meter transparent gallery for temporary exhibitions with outdoor sculpture terrace, and on the ground floor, the new collection of Design and Architecture.
Thus, the museum has thirteen art spaces divided into three architectures: 1945, 1970, and the current one.
The work, which has been going on for almost four years, will open on Tuesday and the entrance will be free until October 13.
