Alfonso Etxeberria, who was the top leader of the ELA union between 1976 and 1988, has died, according to the union in a statement.
Etxeberria (Azpeitia, 1941) ran the union for twelve years, from his appointment after the Third Congress to his replacement by Jose Elorrieta in November 1988.
ELA has stressed that its figure is closely linked to the process of reorganizing and strengthening the union at a time of "great historical importance" and that its role was "key" to establishing its political and strategic foundations.
"The commitment to a trade union vision that brought together organizational work, national identity and social vision was decisive in providing the union with a structured and strategic framework," the union said.
