European Central Bank presents pre-selected designs for new euro notes
The Governing Council plans to take a final decision on the new design by the end of the year, when the development and production of the banknotes will begin, but it will take several years for it to spread to the public.
The European Central Bank(ECB) has presentedthe pre-selected designsfor the new euro notes and launched a surveyfor Europeans togive their opinion until 21 September on two issues: 'European culture'and'rivers and birds', as well as other symbols and means chosen to represent them.
"Euro notes are more than a means of payment ; they are one of the most obvious forms of expression in Europe, "said ECB President Christine Lagarde . "Their designs that combine beauty and meaning will enhance our shared identity, "the ECB president said.
Lagarde has stressed that Europe has a "rich" cultural heritage, a theme that has served to develop the first five designs with European personalities on the front of the banknotes, such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and Bertha von Stuttner.
These first five proposals arefollowed by cultural and leisure activities in the countries of the European Union in an effort to promote European values such as inclusion and dialogue.
The other five designs show different European bird and river species on the front (one bird and/or bird on each card), while on the other side are theECB building, the seat of the European Parliament, theseat of the European Commission, the seatof the EU Court of Justice, the European Court ofAuditors and the building of the EU Council and the European Council.
"The European institutions remind us of the fundamental values of the European project , "Lagarde said in presenting the following proposals.
The pre-selected proposals are the result of a design competition organised in the European Union (EU) in which more than 1,200 graphic designers have participated, of which 25 have been invited to submit proposals for one or both topics. Finally, an independent jury of 21 experts in graphic design, communication, neuroscience and history has pre-selected ten design proposals .
The Europeans will now be able to give their opinion on the finalist proposals following the decision of the Governing Council of theEuropean Central Bank to organise a survey on the network, which will conclude on 21 September 2026. A company conducting independent opinion studies will also conduct a new survey invitinga representative sample of EU citizens to answer the same questions.
Finally, the European Central Bank will publish a report onthe results of both surveys, once the final design concept has been selected. The Governing Council plans to take a final decision on the new design by the end of the year. Then the development and production of the notes will begin, but it will take several years for them to spread to the public.
