Ondarroa Trawl Fleet: "Going out to sea with diesel prices is a loss of money"
Professional diesel has increased by 227% since February, and the Ondarroa High Fishing Producers Association has reported that this increase must be assumed by fishermen because the wholesaler sets the purchase price for fish.
In the words of Mikel Ortiz of theOndarroa Association of Deep-sea Fisheries Producers (OPPAO), "to go out to sea at these diesel prices is to lose money."
Professional diesel has increased by 227% since February, and fuel accounts for 50-60% of the operating cost.
The problem, Ortiz explained, is that to compensate for this increase in the cost of diesel, they cannotraise the sale price of fish becauseof the auction system, which is the wholesale seller who sets the purchase price of fish.
On the other hand, Ortiz points out that the 20 cents of aid announced is very low and has not arrived.
This mooring of the Ondarroa fleet affects the whole chain of fish supplies as wholesalers and fishmongers, and they will have very little activity.
