General housing strike: will there be one or two calls in Hego Euskal Herria?
ELA and LAB reaffirm their intention to call for mobilization in favor of housing market intervention, while CCOO and UGT will demand decent wages to buy a home.
The trade union pulse over the housing crisis in Hego Euskal Herria has raised the question of whether one or two general strike calls will take place.
The Basque unions ELA and LABcall for mobilisation , but believe that the Basque and Navarro governments should be asked to intervene in the housing market. CCOO and UGT prefer to claim decent wages, so that citizens can buy a flat.
The date is also in the air, ELA and LAB will decide in the next few days; CCOO and UGT have only confirmed that it will be before the start of the election campaign for the time being.
LAB and ELA
The ELA union announced on Tuesday the call for a general strike for housing. In a statement, it said that priority will be given to "addressing the problem from Hego Euskal Herria" and that is why they are working with the housing unions and other social and trade union agents "to increase pressure on all institutions, especially in the ACV and Navarre".
LAB, for its part, has ensured that it is working to agree to a general strike, together with other unions and social partners. Housing has become a major social concern and LAB has begun to "organize tenants" and take trade union action for the right to housing.
CCOO and UGT
On the other hand, on Monday, the CC.OO. and UGT unions agreed to a 24-hour general strike for the fall to demand decent wages and decent housing, a measure that must now be ratified by the highest governing bodies, as announced by both organizations in a statement.
