The Asian algae that invaded Cantabria have reached the beaches of Bizkaia

In recent days the Asian algae of various invading beaches of Cantabria have reached the beach of Muskiz (Bizkaia) already. It is not harmful, and its rapid expansion in the Cantabrian is associated with the high water temperature of this time of year.
In Cantabria, the local government launched a campaign last Friday to eliminate this seaweed, and in just three days 1,620 tons were collected, which have been deposited on a municipal plot for treatment and compost.
In Muskiz, bathers and villagers have expressed their displeasure at the accumulation of seaweed along the coast, which makes it difficult to bathe and changes the usual image of the beach. They are concerned that this invasive species may reach more beaches on the Basque coast.
