Bengoetxea claims respect between institutions and representatives after the "rude" parliamentary appearance of Pérez Iglesias
The UPV/EHU rector has asked the Counsellor for Science, Universities and Innovation to abandon "personal disqualifications" and "respect" the public university and its representatives.
The controversy between UPV/EHU Rector Joxerramon Bengoetxea and University Counselor Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias over public university funding seems far from over.
As Pérez Iglesiasstated yesterday in the Basque Parliament, the arguments put forward by the UPV rector to denounce the "underfunding" of the public university are based on "truths, fallacies and euphemisms".
In a statement released to the media the following day, Bengoetxea has responded to the counselor, expressing his "surprise" at the "rude" appearance of Pérez Iglesias and asking him to respect the public university and its representatives.
Bengoetxea considers it essential to restart the path of cooperation and abandon the assessments of "personal disqualifications" or the competence of the rectoral team to manage the academic institution.
He explains that the strategy of the UPV/EHU has been to "present at all times in a verified and transparent manner the current needs of the institution", which are based on a technical report of more than 500 pages, which was made available to the counsellor herself and her team at the meeting held in Lakua on 14 November, with the aim of channelling the differences on the needs of the public university.
That is why, according to Bengoetxea, "it is particularly surprising" that, "once the institutional relationship has been channelled through dialogue, the rector and his team have been suggested to delegitimize the rector and his team on charges of misinformation, manipulation, and use of rhetorical resources after the truth."
On the other hand, it is considered "sterile" to question the honesty and commitment of those who democratically represent the Basque public university. For all these reasons, the UPV/EHU Rectorate Team has askedthe University Counsellor to have due respect for the university's representatives.
