These will be the main trials in the Basque Country in 2026: macho murders, homicides and alleged leaks of Osakidetza oppositions
A number of trials will focus on the judicial interest throughout next year.
The trials for the macho crimes of Maialen, who was stabbed in Vitoria in 2023, and Leonor, who was shot a year ago in his home in Pasaia (Gipuzkoa), will be the ones that will awaken the judicial interest in Euskadi in 2026. Another of the trials that will be in the care center will be the hearing of the alleged leaks of the 2016-2017 OPE.
Maialen was murdered on May 27, 2023 in an apartment in the Alavesa capital. There is still no date for the trial, but it is expected to take place in the first quarter of the year.
A popular jury will try this woman's partner at the Araba Court, and the prosecution is demanding 45 years' imprisonment for the alleged killer, who at the time of the crime was pregnant with twins.
Thehearing on Leonor's case will be held on a date yet to be determined at the Gipuzkoa Court. As in the case of Maialen, a popular jury will try the accused, who until a week before the crime was his partner, who allegedly shot him in the head after shooting him in the thigh in front of his roommate and the victim's daughter.
Next year, too, the young manwho killed five men in Bilbao, with whom he arranged appointments through a contact app, will sit on the bench again.
This man had already been sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder after attempting to kill a man on a sexual appointment at his home in the Old Town of Bilbao, and in November he was confirmed with another 25-year sentence for murdering another man using the "mataleon" technique.
In addition, other penalties for theft and fraud involving the use of credit cards should be added to the victims, and four other cases have yet to be resolved for the deaths of men in similar circumstances and one for attempted murder.
Another crime that will come to trial in 2026 will be that of the young Lukas Aguirre, who was stabbed to death on the morning of Christmas 2022 in San Sebastián. The Public Prosecutor's Office requests 22 years' imprisonment for the principal accused, 22 years for a second man as a necessary co-operative, both in pre-trial detention and three years for a woman charged as a cover-up.
In 2026, two cases relating to road safety will also be tried, the first of which is against a driver facing a 14-year and 2-month prison request in February for the death of three people in a collision with another vehicle on the N-I road off Legorreta (Gipuzkoa).
The second will be in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where a twenty-year-old couple, Cristian and Izaro, died in January 2024. The driver who hit their vehicle while watching an illegal race will sit on the bench.
In addition, a hearing will be held in the Alavesa capital against 14 leaders of the Blood group who will be tried for belonging to a criminal group, but who will be charged individually with other crimes.
Finally, after last September the Court of Álava filed complaints against 17 of the 19 doctors and opponents investigated for alleged leaks in the 2016-2017 OPE of Osakidetza, the remaining two, both in the area of Plastic, Aesthetic and Restorative Surgery, will be tried by the shortened procedure, which is used for less serious offences, in which case the penalty is up to nine years' imprisonment.
