Exhibition on the New Fuero de Bizkaia in Bilbao to recall the historic key of the Basque self-government
The New Fuero de Bizkaia, about 500 years old, has become the centrepiece of an exhibition programme aimed at bringing the citizens closer to the historical foundations of Basque self-government.
Approved by the General Meetings of Bizkaia in 1526 and ratified by Charles I, the Fuero Nuevo updated its own territorial law and consolidated an institutional system based on the treaty, local freedoms and its own legal system.
On the occasion of its anniversary, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the General Meetings have launched two complementary exhibitions, the first of which is exhibited in the Foral Library of Bilbao in a technical manner and contains original documents and various historical editions of the Fuero.
The second exhibition, of an informative nature, has been located on the Gran Vía de Bilbao and in the coming months will visit Balmaseda, Bermeo, Portugalete and Galdakao. This exhibition, structured in panels, explains the evolution of the self-government of Bizkaia and the importance of the Fuero as the basis of the current institutional system.
In general, the programme highlights the fundamental role that the New Fuero has played in the history of Basque self-government and its value as an institutional reference point today.
