Beach season begins in Bizkaia and on the beaches of Donostia and Zarautz
This Monday the bathing season started on the beaches of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, in San Sebastián and Zarautz, and will continue until the end of September. In most other localities, it will begin on June 13.
Along the same lines as Zarautz last year, San Sebastián has also renewed the beach ordinance, which will no longer allow smoking or the use of speakers on the beaches.
When the City of San Sebastián proposed to amend the beach ordinance, it also proposed to allow dogs to enter the beach after beach hours have expired and before cleaning work begins, between 9 p.m. and midnight.
However, in view of the large number of appeals filed by the citizens, the City Council was forced to reverse this measure, so as before dogs will not be admitted during the summer season.
On the other hand, there is another change for the new season, and this year rescuers are required to be trained more rigorously to work. In the past, a training course taught by the Red Cross or the Swimming Federation was sufficient, but now they are required to have an official qualification, which may make it difficult to find a sufficient number of rescuers.
87% of areas have good water quality
According to the Department of Health, 87% of the 46 bathing areas registered in the Basque Country have excellent or good water quality, although it is recommended not to bathe in the areas of Las Arenas de Getxo, Toña de Sukarrieta, Karraspio Txiki de Mendexa and Puerto Menor de Zierbena because they do not meet the established quality criteria.
Throughout the summer, the Department of Health will conduct weekly water checks and sampling and make the results available to the public on its website.
