The mayor of Errenteria admits that there is a crisis between the City Council and Kukai "in terms of process and trust"

The Errenteria City Council appeared today at a press conference to give details of the macho attacks that have taken place in this municipality in recent days and to explain the management of them by the City Council.

Last Thursday, the City Council issued a statement publicizing the decision to suspend the activities of the Bertso Eskola in responseto the macho attacks known during the month of May, strongly condemning all these events, and showing full solidarity with the victims.

The day before, on Wednesday, a meeting was held with the parents of the pupils of the Bertso Eskola , to inform them of this matter through the City Council, where they were informed of the complaints that the City Council was aware of and of the decisions taken on them.

"As we said at the beginning, the City Council learned of all this in May, when the victims took the step of denouncing the situation and communicating it to the feminist movement and the Bertsozale Association. And, aware of the gravity of the situation, the City Council took decisions in May, from the very beginning," said Mayor Aizpea Otaegi.

"From now on we have a complex and difficult management ahead of us to learn more about what happened and to be able to help those young people and parents back in school heal the pain that has been caused, "he added.

Charges against Jon Maya

Despite the publicity of the Bertso Eskola case, there are other powders associated with the dancer Jon Maya .

In this regard, this was the first time that the City Council has made public statements on this matter, as it was a priority to protect bitktimas and respect their will.

It is reported that the Errenteria City Council was aware of the allegations against Jon Maya in early December 2024. 

Moreover, the legal representation of Kukai and the dialogue with the City Council was changed, leaving it to the President of Kukai. Since then, and throughout 2025, the City Council has been in contact with Kukai through the President, not through Jon Maia, as before.

"At that time, the City Council understood that Jon Maya and Kukai had addressed the issue responsibly, that they had chosen to respect the wishes of the victims and that a non-punitivist and yes reparative will could be made that the victims had expressed. And, separating the actions of Jon Maya and the company Kukai, which has moved away from the public sphere, we decided to keep our agreement and nominative subsidy with Kukai.

Later, however, in November 2025, we were announced that Kukai and Jon Maya were planning to resume their normal activity and that in February 2026 the company would formally report to the City Council. Until that meeting was held and detailed and complete information was received, the relationship between the City Council and Kukai in 2026 was frozen.

Finally, a meeting was held in April, and, in the words of the mayor, "there were two milestones that deviated from the agreed path that we were building :

- Jon Maya is back in public.

Signed by a member of the Kukai Steering Team, a note has been issued calling into question all the principles that had been laid down.

As a result, there has been a crisis between the City Council and Kukai, "both in terms of process and trust."

"We believe that the only way out of this crisis IS to return to the process: to give the victims the centrality that belongs to them again," the mayor said. "In the meantime, 2026, we started the relationship with Kukaire by freezing, and so on," he concluded.

The earthquake in Errenteria has been causedby the crisis between the city council and the dance group Kukai. 2024 is based on testimonies of sexist attacks by several women on the director of the dance group Kukai ,Jon Maya. At the request of the women who were victims, no public complaint was made. In parallel, the Feminist Movement began working privately to initiate a transformative and restorative process. 

Mayor Aizpea Otaegi, who appeared on Monday to explain what had happened, said that the City Council was informed in May "when the victims took the step of denouncing the situation and informed the feminist movement and the dance school of what had happened."

"Aware of the gravity of the situation, theCity Council has taken decisions from the outset. From now on, we have a complex and difficult management ahead of us. In response, we have set in motion processes to learn more about what has happened and to help these young people and parents back in school to repair the pain that has been caused, to support and assist the victims, "Otaegi said.

In this regard, he explains that they have frozen relations with the Kukai group, due to the intention of Jon Maya to return to the stage. In other words, there has been a crisis between the City Council and Kukai "in terms of process and trust." 

"The only way out of this is to go back to the process, giving the victims the centrality that belongs to them, while 2026 we started the relationship with Kukai frozen and we are still the same," he said.

"We have been accused of a lack of transparency, of wanting to destroy a local emblem, of acting in contradiction and of protecting Jon Maya," he concluded.
