More than a million people attended the papal mass in Madrid, where he met cultural and sporting representatives this afternoon
Pope Leon XIV has urged the faithful, especially the poor, the sick, the lonely, and those who have lost hope, to maintain an open attitude towards others, encouraging an attitude of support for others.
More than a million people attended Sunday morning's massin Madrid byPope Leon XIV , where he called for Catholics to live committed to others . "No one can kneel before God and despise his brother," the pope said.
The religious tradition ofSpain and the famous celebrations around the Catholic Church have been praised by Leon XIV, who has highlighted its great influence on the culture, art and daily life of the country.
In this context, he explains that processions represent the closeness to the people of Jesus , who walk through streets and squares to contribute to the daily life of the community.
Lastly, he urged the faithful to be open to others, especially the poor, the sick, the unaccompanied, and the hopeless, by encouraging an attitude of support for others.
The ceremony lasted about two hours between the mass and the procession of the Corpus Christi. The pope retired at about 12.35 p.m. to rest at the Nunciature before resuming his evening schedule.
Pope in papamóvil on his way to the evening event at the Movistar Arena
After the break, Pope Leon XIV met the members of the Order of St. Augustine at the Nunciature at 4.30 p.m.
In front of this headquarters, Catholic groups have gathered to protest against the government's project to reform the Valley of the Fallen monument.
Hazte Oir, led by Ignacio Arsuaga, has collected more than 125,000 signatures to urge Leon XIV to take advantage of his position in the Vatican to stop the plan of Pedro Sánchez's government.
After a meeting with members of the Order of St. Augustine, the pope left the Nunciature in a closed car and went to the RTVE headquarters in Torrespaña. In the parking lot of these facilities he got out of that vehicle to board the papamóvil and from there began the afternoon tour, heading for the Movistar Arena.
On theway to the meeting, organised under the slogan "Weaving networks", thousands of people have been waiting for him on both sides of the road.
During his arrival, he had to stay many times on his way to the papamóvil for Leon XIV to bless the babies, namely more than 15 children.
It was his fourth papamóvil since he arrived in Madrid, accompanied by his secretary and the Archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo.
He arrived at the Movistar Arena at 6 p.m., when the evening event began.
He has had both politicians and personalities from the world of culture, art, economics and sport, and thousands of people from civil society.
The event was attended by, among others, the President of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the Vice-Presidents of the Government, Carlos Cuerpo and Yolanda Díaz, and the Minister of Education, Milagros Tolón.
Antonio Banderas, Rozalén and Teresa Perales, along with other artists, have performed on the stage.
Victims, on Monday's agenda
This Monday will be the "most complex day" of the visit of Pope Leon XIV to Madrid, whose agenda will take him to different parts of the capital, such as Congress, the Cathedral of the Almudena and the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, so the authorities have called for teleworkingbecause there will be traffic cuts throughout the day.
Leon XIV will begin the day with a meeting with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, which will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Nunciature and then go to Congress.
In the afternoon, at 4.15 p.m., he will meet with victims of abuse at the headquarters of the Apostolic Nunciature in Madrid.
The main associations of victims of abuse have reported that they have been left out of the papal visit, as they have not been summoned and fear that thepope will only meet with the people involved in the Repara project, launched by the Archdiocese of Madrid to care for those affected.
That is why, just today, Miguel Hurtado, spokesman for the Association of Victims of Abuse of the Church of Reparation Integral Ya and the first whistleblower of abuse at the Abbey of Monserrat, staged a fictional meeting with Leon XIV in the antechamber of the Nunciature, since Hurtado is not among the victims who will meet with the Pope on Mondays.
